My second commuter bike, acquired in December 2008 after my Scott Purgatory was stolen. Together with it I bought my first U-lock, a Kryptonite Evolution S4 LS (11.5"/29cm), which I still own, although it doesn’t look as good as back in 2008.
Quickly transformed into a single-speed even before leaving the store. It was my first experience with an half-link chain, it was useful to get the chain tension right, but it was noisier than the regular chains I had used before. Apart from the half-link chain, it also had some bulky BMX (2.3"?) tyres, good enough for city life. Looking back, I think this bike inherited lots of leftovers from the bike shop.
I used it as my daily bicycle for around 6 years. I left it parked in many different places during the day, during the night, and, together with the kryptonite lock, it was always there and ready to go. Wheels kept straight throughout the whole time, and to be honest I don’t know what else to say about this commuter bike.
There were two notable episodes, 3y on and someone tried to steal the bike, but as they couldn’t cut through the U-lock, they decided to saw the seat tube. WHYYYYYYYY? I kept on riding it though. Another time I left it parked outside during the night, and someone tried to break the u-lock, this time they broke the u-lock’s fitting that goes into the u-lock support, they also broke the orange kryptonite cover. From there on I had to carry the giant u-lock on the handlebar, this lead to the polishing of the handlebar and brake lever! I’ll need to take a picture of that.
(I’ve just noticed that on the first 3 pictures I’ve clipless pedals on the bike, I can’t even recall why!)
